Renaissance — The Inspiration Behind the Collection

Renaissance is our very first designed collection, a debut that marks the beginning of a new chapter for GrandNwar. From the very start, it felt important that this first body of work carry depth, intention, and meaning. Renaissance was conceived as a collection made of layers, much like life itself.

At its core, the collection embraces three pillars that are deeply rooted in our brand: honouring ancestral and cultural heritage, celebrating resilience and the journeys we live, and drawing inspiration from the quiet power of nature.

Each piece was designed as a wearable form of remembrance an object that carries story, emotion, and presence.

The visual language of Renaissance is guided by symbols, forms that have followed us across generations, landscapes, and inner worlds.

One of the central symbols of the collection is the Flanbwayan tree, a tree impossible to ignore when it blooms across Mauritius every December. Its fiery red flowers announce renewal, beauty, and the certainty of cycles. For us, the Flanbwayan became a living metaphor for rebirth.

Alongside the Flanbwayan stands the Phoenix , a symbol of rebirth, resilience, and transformation.

Hand-drawn and translated into sculptural form, the phoenix appears as a reminder that endings are never final, and that renewal often rises from what has been lived, endured, and transformed.

One word anchored the creation of this collection: Alchemist — the art of transmuting pain, hardship, and challenge into something meaningful, beautiful, and life-giving. Renaissance was shaped through this lens: not erasing difficulty, but honouring it by transforming it into art.

Nature informed not only the symbolism of Renaissance, but also its structure and movement.

The spiral of life, a recurring motif in the collection, represents continuity, evolution, and growth. It speaks to journeys that are not linear, yet always forward-moving.

The Banyan tree, with its roots growing both into the earth and cascading from above, inspired the flowing, multi-strand constructions found throughout the collection. These layered forms echo grounding and expansion, anchoring us below while allowing movement and expression above.

Our intention while crafting the Renaissance collection was to invite each person who wears a piece to lean inward, to listen, to feel, and to reconnect with their own journey.

Renaissance is an invitation to embrace authenticity, to honour self-discovery, and to love who you are becoming. It speaks to rebirth a return to one’s true self and to the quiet power found in choosing oneself again and again.

Each piece is meant to be worn as a celebration: of resilience, of growth, of challenges overcome, and of victories both seen and unseen. A reminder that every step taken, every transformation lived, is worthy of honour.

The Renaissance collection is composed of 13 distinct designs, each carrying its own story and Creole name. Together, they form a constellation, individual yet connected.

The collection is crafted using AAA Mozambique red garnet, chosen for its deep hue and symbolism of passion, strength, femininity, and resilience. Garnet grounds the collection in both earth and emotion, acting as a quiet yet powerful thread throughout the designs.

Every piece is designed to be worn not only as adornment, but as an extension of one’s journey. A reminder of where we come from, what we carry, and how we continue to rise.
